- Xara is well-known for its easy-to-use Web graphics software for home and business, such as WebStyle and MenuMaker. But its flagship product, Xara, is unusual in its universal appeal to everyone from professional designers to home users.
- Simplicity is important to Xara. To a graphic designer, the interface might look a bit basic but that's largely because of the lack of palettes and dialogue windows. To a business user, though, the Xara interface has tended to look a bit unfamiliar and scary at first. But Xara X1 sports a more inviting interface for beginners, with big friendly tool icons and an extensive set of video-based tutorials, that's right, there is another area where Xara X1 really excels – help and tutorials. The CD is crammed with movies that cover just about every aspect of learning the program and are much preferable to a stuffy book. From the basic introduction to the many 'how to' examples, you feel right at home and you can download (update) your movie library online...!
- But it's the combination of speed and simplicity which empowers Xara X1. Professional illustrators can produce complex, photo-realistic results with much less effort than would be required using FreeHand, Illustrator or CorelDraw. At the same time, the program makes everyday business and Web graphics a breeze for the non-artist.
- One major breakthrough that X1 introduces is the fact that images are embedded in their native format – most usefully JPEG (for the record all edits are stored as XML data which is then reapplied to the embedded image on opening almost instantly thanks to Xara’s speed). In a program like Illustrator by comparison each bitmap is stored uncompressed so that a typical digital camera image, which might eat up 2MB as a JPEG, will eat up >::20MB. Most importantly, every time you copy the image within Illustrator this will add another 20MB making saving and processing increasingly longwinded and eventually unmanageable. Within Xara X1 however the unique “zero-memory footprint” approach means that each new copy and edited copy requires no additional memory or file space. The end result is that Xara X1 becomes the ideal platform for creating compositions that mix native vectors and imported bitmaps.
- Even if you're an experienced digital illustrator you may find Xara X1's ease-of-use a refreshing alternative to Macromedia's FreeHand, Adobe's Illustrator or even Corel's CorelDraw. In addition, it promises to be up to 500 per cent faster than other leading vector software and its photo and bitmap-handling tools are second to none.
