Halloween Costumes: Making your Own
Remember when you were a child? Which costumes do you remember the most? I’ll bet it wasn’t the costume with the plastic mask and the elastic band holding it to your face. Halloween is a time for you and your child to share in creativity, spend time together, and create lasting life time memories. Halloween costumes can be expensive. There are many store bought commercial costumes available at local stores, but besides the cost, there is lack of imagination, and you always find several kids wearing the same costume. I know of ways that you can make your own and make a lasting impression. Homemade costumes are the way to go! Below are several examples of costumes you won’t find in stores, costumes that can be created for less money out of your pockets. These are ideas that will give you something to work with: they are cheap, easy and very creative.
Not just an ordinary Ghost: Take an old white sheet, cut out the eyes. Be sure it’s short enough not to trip you. For an extra spooky flare, use a black sheet. Dress up your ghost with make-up around the eyes. Use ideas from pumpkin carving kits to show personality in the ghost’s face. Add lipstick and cheek color for a little fancy flare. Think about a necklace and a pair of earings. Don’t forget a pair of fancy shoes. For a man, think about a tie, beard, and mustache

A Live Scarecrow: Over sized flannel shirt, Jean overalls, or faded blue jeans with holes or patches, have some hay sticking out of the holes. Rope for a belt and to tie at the cuffs of his jeans and sleeves, stuff the shirt and jeans with a little bit of straw, some grocery bags, extra clothing will make it look stuffed. Don’t forget to some hay out of the leg openings and the shirt sleeves. Draw some stitches on the face and a bit of make up to make your child look fake. For extra fun, sit very still on the porch while trick or treaters some to the door. Move just slightly to make them jump a bit.
The American tourist: For girls, a loud sun dress, fancy flats, a big sun hat, lots of maps and or flyers. Add a large camera. For the boys, use a Hawaii shirt, shorts or khaki pants incase it’s cold. A Large straw hat, or a hat with the logo representing a favorite vacation spot. Gals bright loud dress, flats, big sun hat. A fanny pack, or a large bag. Don’t forget to look like your lost. Guys can use a tourist bag, or a homemade bag that you could write the name of a favorite vacation spot on. These are cheap and sold at craft stores or Walmart. Add sunglasses and a fake sun burn with lots of blush.
The Silliest Clown: Dad or Grandpa’s clothes that are way to big. Decorate by using either fabric paint, or markers. Hot glue on some extra large pop-poms, add ridiculous make up,a cheap wig, and a hat. You can stuff the suit with pillows or tissue paper. Sew any areas that may make it difficult to keep together. Always remember your child may need to get out of it easy for a potty break. I recommend sewing any stuffing in between an over sized t-shirt and the silly shirt on the outside.
Costumes made from a box, that’s right just a box:
Rubiks Cube: Wear black shirt and pants. Cut out the bottom for the legs, holes for the arm and head. Paint the box to show each color of a mixed up Rubiks cube.
A Car: Your choice, a fire truck, race car, police car, or just a big old dump truck. You’ll need a box, some duct tape, paint, and a little imagination. This would be a great one for your child to help you with.
A Headstone: Cut our holes for your body on a box. Add white ghostly paint to your face. Perhaps you can hot glue on some fake flowers. Paint the box grey and put words like:
Here lies the body of JOHN ROUND, Lost at sea and never found.
Here lies HENRY BLAKE. He stepped on the gas instead of the brake
Soon rip, Soon rotten, Soon gone, But not forgotten
RIP Ted N. Buried
RIP Barry M. Deep
See I told you I was sick.
A Spider: Start out with a black sweat suit and 2 pairs of black tights or thick nylons. Cut the legs off the tights and stuff each leg with cotton batting. Stuff each leg until it is as long as the sleeves of the sweatshirt. If you can sew, you can make the spider legs using black material instead of black tights, but the tights look more authentic. Attach two legs on each side of the sweatshirt, spaced evenly below the sweatshirt arm. I would recommend sewing them on because safety pins don’t always hold up. When the legs are attached to the sweatshirt, use heavy weight fishing line to tie around each leg to show the natural breaks in a spider’s legs. Also tie fishing line to tie the legs together leaving enough slack so the legs will hang freely. Next attach the second leg to the wrist of the person wearing the sweatshirt in the same fashion. When finished it will look like the two fake 'spider legs' are moving on their own when the person moves his or her hand. For finishing touches you can wear a black hat, paint your face black, and/or wear black mittens or gloves! You can also use yellow spray paint to paint stripes on the legs and a spot on the stomach to look like you are a tarantula.
No matter what your choice is, choosing to make a Halloween costume with your child will be a costume remembered forever. It shows creativity and brings entertainment and lots of laughs. No more lines of children wearing the same exact costume, you are way too creative.
