Horrors of Toledo came into existence when the 3 members Sashelle ,Ryley , and Nigel had an enlightening moment and sign from an owl who spoke to them with a wise tongue at midnight one fall night as they were backpacking in Alaska. Using their love for old westerns ,horror movies, punkrock ,white trash, indie,experimental ,goth music,thrift store shopping, dining and dashing, magic, sword eating, old converse tennis shoes , and soap collecting the three experimental group of misfits decided to form Horrors of Toledo to have fun and get over their fear of Orange County bowling alleys ..
Some of their musical influences are Yma Sumac,The Butthole Surfers ,Cramps, The Shins,Can ,Hazil Adkins,The Black Angels, The Moving Units , The Fall, Birthday Party ,Buddy Holly ,My Bloody Valentine, Jesus And The Mary chain,Autolux, Hazil Adkins ,XTC ,TSOL , X ,The Church, Soft Cell, Sonic Youth , Destroyer, Bowie, Murder By Death ,The Stooges ,The Avengers ,The Clash, Calexico , The Pixies , The Leaving Train, The Moldy Peaches but they sound nothing like their influences at all! Nigel and Sashelle came from a band called The Generics where they played sold out shows at Dodger stadium and were on their way to a multi –million dollar contract before Sashelle cussed the owner out and Nigel beat him up with a wet paper towel. Like a wrestling superstar switching to a different federation Sashelle also plays bass under an alias name of Violet for Vamped Records recording artists The Family Shocks . Nigel decided to put down the guitar for a bit with Horrors of Toledo because too many fans were mugging him in the front stage and robbing him of his bling bling jewelry . Like a one man band that you see at a carnival, Nigel is more than capable of playing all instruments at once. Instead he will be playing drums his first instrument learned and will sing background vocals with hopes of becoming a modern day team like The Righteous Brothers with Ryley.
Ryley is the man with the Jerry Lewis movie moves on stage with a Johnny Cash meets Nick Cave meets Don Ho meets Lee Ving on vocals with a truly original guitar sound also. His guitar once was owned by Joan Jett. He was in two groups who once opened for Pee Wee Hermans Ski Circus called Mr.A and also The Wire Hangers . He writes lyrics about todays problems,love,life,books,movies,cars, and society in general in a twisted way of his own.
This is an energetic band that will be coming to a venue near you soon. They have a debut album coming out on newly formed Vamped Records . They go into the studio at Griff Dog Records in Huntington Beach on May 11th and played on April 26th at KXLU 88.9 FMs “Noise Pollution” in Los Angeles ….
