Hand painted Berlin Archaeopteryx bird fossil and cast from a mold made from the real fossil. The slab MEASURES: 17.5 inches tall, by 14 inches wide. It is ready to hang with a picture wire attached to the back.

Archaeopteryx is pronounced ar'kee op' terix meaning "ancient wing" This creature is found fossilized with the dinosaurs in Jurassic strata, which includes Compsognathus.

Archaeopteryx is regarded as an intermediate form between birds and reptiles, it has now been shown to be a true bird with feathers identical to modern birds, with aerodynamic flight feathers, and was capable of powered flight. It has teeth, claws on its wings, and a long bony tail. These are common features of extinct birds.

Only eight Archaeopteryx specimens are known. The Berlin specimen, was discovered in the Middle Jurassic Solnhofen Formation, Dorr Limestone quarry in Germany near Eichstatt in 1877 by Karl Haberlein. He sold it to the Berlin Museum of Natural History in 1880. It is the most complete and well-preserved specimen. It is pictured in countless books, and is the most famous fossil in the world. The fossil is an entire skeleton with a full set of feather impressions - unlike the other seven fossil specimens.

However the skull was crushed in the Berlin specimen, and the skulls in the other six specimens are missing. It was from the minute details from this one uncrushed skull of the Eichstatt specimen.
