my recollection. I remember as a youngster when visiting relatives in Europe, a Sunday "el té completa" (Tea Complete) at the local Castle, the Ladies worn white gloves & used these utensils to place hors d'oeuvres and/or cake on their plate to enjoy with a Cup of Tea/Coffee
this tradition is still practiced today at finer Country Club Resorts throughout Europe & the United States
