Beat the Heat
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 is an arcade racer that is packed with shortcuts, full-throttle power slides, and speeds reaching 200 mph. As with most racers, you apply the gas and brake with the A and B buttons respectively. You can also use the handbrake or initiate a controlled slide. At the beginning of each race you can choose either Automatic or Manual Transmission, but beginners should stick with auto at first.
As you race through over 20 courses you will be pursued by the boys in blue at every turn. The law-enforcement is relentless and will try anything to pull you over. They will ram you, cut you off and set up roadblocks, but fortunately you will be behind the wheel of some powerful street machines.
Featuring 22 of the most coveted exotic cars on the planet, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 will let you ride a variety of dream cars. You will start with respectable rides like the Lotus Elise and Opel Speedster and work you way up to more fancy offerings from Ferrari, Porsche, and Lamborghini to name a few. It is a pleasing stable of the ultimate streetcars and you can even view vital technical data for each car, including engine specifications.
Game Modes
You can compete in more than 60 different events in the two single-player modes, Hot Pursuit and Championship. In each event, you can earn a Bronze, Silver or Gold medal in each event. Perfectionists will want to return to past events and go for the gold to unlock new cars and tracks.
The Hot Pursuit mode lets you compete in a branching ladder of 33 events on your way to becoming the Ultimate Road Racer. In this mode, the law will be breathing down your neck the whole way so you'll soon find out if you have what it takes make them eat your dust.
The more traditional Championship mode challenges you to race the open roads, but without the threat of getting busted by the cops. You will, however have to fend off competing racers.
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 also provides fun multiplayer modes. Two players can go head-to-head via split screen on any unlocked course. There is even a Cop vs. Speeder option so one player can attempt to bring the other to justice. Choose your car wisely or you'll get burned by an opponent with more vehicular muscle.
Graphics
The deftly rendered cars in Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 still have their showroom shine, so you'll see reflections of the scenery as you drive by. You will even leave a dusty trail when you take an off-road shortcut. The awkward crash animations are slightly less impressive. Watching your wheels spin on end a dozen times or more gets old fast.
When being pursued at high speeds visibility is important. Fortunately, you have a choice of three camera angles. A nice rear-view mirror is also included so you can check out the course ahead and the heat behind at the same time.
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 is a fun arcade racer. Motoring enthusiasts will enjoy the selection of exotic cars. There is plenty to see and do for a single player and two players can give each other high-octane lessons. With the cool police-chase theme, Need for Speed 2: Hot Pursuit proves more fun than yet another sequel to Smokey and the Bandit. Sorry, Burt Reynolds.
