Lasik is a surgical procedure intended to reduce a person's dependency on glasses or contact lenses.
Pre Operative Instructions - LASIK * Remove your SOFT contact lenses at least 3 days or HARD and RGP contact lenses at least 3 weeks prior to your procedure. * You must arrange someone to drive you home after procedure. * You must return the day after the procedure for a post-operative appointment. * Wash your hair the night before or the morning of your procedure. * Eat a light meal prior to your procedure. * No caffeine (4) hours prior to the procedure. * Pick up your prescription of topical antibiotic(Vigamox) at a local pharmarcy before the procedure. Being this medication with you on the procedure day. * Do not wear make-up on the day of the procedure. Clean off all make-up including mascara the night before and again, the morning of. * Do not wear any cologne/perfume on the day of the procedure. * No Lid Hygiene or Re stasis on the day of procedure. Use Non-Preservative artificial tears every hour upon awakening on the day of procedure.
Procedure Day * Arrive at your check in time and plan to be at our center for 3 hours. * Your eye(s) will be anesthetized with topical eye drops so you will experience minimal discomfort. * Please bring extra clothing, We keep the procedure room temperature cool to ensure maximal performance of the laser. * Please turn cell phones and pagers off before entering the procedure room. * Please do not chew gum. Please advise the surgeon if you feel the need to cough, swallow or move during the procedure.
After Procedure Care 1. You may feel scratchiness and your eye(s) may be watery during the first few hours following your procedure. Keep your eyes closed during the first 4 hours after your procedure. You may take Tylenol/Advil every 6 hours as needed for discomfort. 2. The doctor may place a contact lens on your eye(s) post-operatively. If the lens comes out, preserve it in the contact lens case with solution. DO NOT throe it away. Call your doctor immediately. 3. Do not open your eyes quickly. Please drops of Artificial Tears on your eyelashes and let it seep into your eyes before slowly opening your eyes. 4. When instilling drops, look up and place in lower eyelids to avoid the bottle from contacting your eyes. Close your eyes lightly without squeezing. Place pressure between the inner corner of your eyes and the bridge of your nose. Please wait 2 minutes between between instilling different eye drops. 5. Keep your eyes shields on until the morning after the procedure. The shields must be worn while napping or sleeping for 2 weeks. 6. Rest your eyes as much as possible the first day after your procedure. (A dark room is best for your comfort). Avoid squeezing your eyes.
After Procedure Care:
Topical Eye Drop Instruction: (The doctor will inform you of any changes) 1. Vigamox (antibiotic) - one drop 4 times (or every 6 hours) for 5 days. 2. Omnipred (anti-inflammatory) - one drop every 2 hours on the procedure day while awake, beginning immediately after arriving home. One day 2 - day 5, use one drop every 6 hours, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor. shake well before each use. 3. Preservative Free Artificial Tears (individually packaged, clear tubes/over-the-counter artificial tears) - one drop every 1 hour while awake beginning the day of your procedure (you can re-cap but discard after 8 hours), and every 2 hours starting the second day for one week. 4. Artificial Tears (bottle) - Four times per day after the first week. This may purchased at any drug store.
Things to Avoid After the Procedure 1. Do not attempt to drive until you can do so safely. 2. Do not rub or bump your eyes for 2 weeks. Be careful around children they have the tendency to reach the eyes. 3. Do not get soap, water or eye make-up (mascara/eyeliner) into the operated eye(s) for 2 weeks. You can wear light eye make-up, such as eye shadow, and wash your face and hair and shower after 2 days. If water gets in your eyes, rinse with artificial tears. 4. Do not participate in vigorous sports (anything that could come in contact or hit your eyes) or swim for 2 weeks. Non-contact exercise such as walking, jogging and weight lifting is okay. 5. After 2 weeks, yo may resume full activity. However you must always wear protective goggles when participating in activities that may cause injury to the eyes.
As your Eye Heals As the cornea heals you may experience the following side effects, which will gradually improve within the first few weeks or months. 1. Your vision immediately after the laser procedure will be slightly blurry, but will improve over the next few days. 2. It is common to experience fluctuating vision, halos or glare around lights, particularly at night. There symptoms will slowly improve in the following months. 3. You may experience sensitivity to night. Sunglasses, especially polarized sunglasses can help decrease glare. 4. You may have redness or red spots on your eyes. There will resolve over 2 weeks. 5. Most people return to work and normal activity within 1-2 days, but results may vary.
When to Call Your Doctor * Increase pain after the first day after procedure. * Discharge or increased redness. *Abrupt changes in vision.
