Life Changer Coins
Bags of unique 1976 coins save life in freakish accident back in 2005 and now for the first time are available to the pubic.
The story begins while I was investigating an old bank building for purchase and renovation – you know the type of building – every town in America seems to have its original bank building now converted to a pub, grill, or some other retail venue. While I was looking over the soundness of the floor and beam construction I accidentally fell through the flooring – landing somewhere in what I suppose would be called the basement. That was all I remembered that afternoon, everything was a blur. Later on I discovered upon breaking through the floor my head lodged between 2 piles of cloth sacks as I lay on the basement floor. The astounding fact was that upon impact into the sacks I became unconscious – totally unaware of what was to happen next. As the Real Estate Broker put it - a giant beam, which supported the entire 1st floor, not to mention holding up the 2nd floor also came crashing down into the basement area where I laid unconscious. Eventually, when it settled it stretched across the sacks directly above my head and appeared to restrict the gigantic beam from compressing my skull and most likely killing me. After spending a day in the hospital for observation I returned back to the old bank site a few days later. What I found was astounding-the sacks that appeared to save my life were moneybags from the Denver Mint-each contained rolls and rolls of unused 1976 Lincoln coins. One of the rolls must had burst open in all the collapsing of the building-I took a few of the coins as a “remembrance”, since it was apparent they had been instrumental in saving my life that crazy afternoon.
I was unaware that my life and everyone’s around me was about to dramatically change beyond anything I ever imagined.
With the handful of coins I saved from the building’s collapse I made about a half dozen mementoes with purchased novelty hardware to remember that near fatal day. A couple of key chains, two money clips with the coins mounted nicely on the front side, and a pair of coins mounted into pendants. The jewelry itself was basic but with the coins attached it made them all very unique I thought.
Being a big fan of money clips, I kept one for myself and loaded a few bucks into it, put it in my pocket and off I went. Never having any urge to gamble, play bingo, or buy lottery tickets I had this strong feeling to buy the state’s lotto ticket this day. It was weird I never had this impulse to buy one in the past-but I did today. I spent one dollar on a quick-pick for the $5.2 million grand prize, which would be drawn later that evening. Feeling obliged to hand out the rest of my “jewelry” I spent the remainder of the day giving the items to my immediate family members. To my mom and younger sister I gave each a pendant, to my best friend I gave a money clip like mine, to my older sister I gave a key chain, and the remaining key chain I gave to our local church pastor.
What happened in the weeks following was amazing! Sunday morning I checked the winning numbers for the preceding day’s lotto and as I read the numbers and matched them against the $1 ticket I purchased-they all were in alignment! All six numbers matched! One lucky winner matched all six numbers for the $5.2 million dollars and it was I!
About four months later my mother won a national magazine contest, which she had been playing for years - in the time before I gave her the pendant she never won as much as a dollar in that contest with the exception of a couple of free ballpoint pens. This time she received a check for $250,000 – she attributes it to what she calls her “life changer coin”.
All who were in possession of a “life changer coin” had their life change in some phenomenal way or another be it riches, a fulfilled dream, an astonishing medical reversal, or just an extremely positive new meaning for life which was not present before receiving their coin. We went 6 for 6 that year and then some! I have never believed in “luck”, but everyone to this date feels I am one of the luckiest persons they have ever met-strange, but true.
My intentions were to never give up the coins ever since I went back and purchased all the sacks of unused coins about a week after my near-fatal accident. After a ridiculous amount of good fortune and with much thought I would like as many people as possible to get something “very good” out of life or “get lucky” if you will, which is why I am making them all available beyond the initial original half dozen.
I am limiting one coin to one name and when they are gone they are gone forever. Not being a coin expert-all the coins are in the original 1976 Denver Mint bags, in paper rolls, unused, and are most likely all 1976 D Lincoln Pennies.
