The Nelson McCoy Sanitary Stoneware Co. was started in 1910 in the town of Roseville, Ohio. They produced a wide range of functional kitchen items. In 1925 the company started expanding into much larger production facilities which allowed them to begin producing many new types of art pottery. In 1990, after many ownership changes, the company ceased all production and went out of business.
The earlier McCoy pottery pieces have a mark which is a circle with a shield inside, and usually a number that reflects the capacity of the container in the measurement of gallons. They also happened to use a clover with a double shield, and an M designation above it.
