PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE RUN AND RACE
Most of us run in races because of (1) the sense of achievement it gives us when we finish the race and (2) the chance to test out our running times with an eye to improving our personal times.
No matter how fit we are, some pre-race preparation can help to make the race a more enjoyable and fulfilling experience. Here’s what I do to prepare myself for a race and which I found to be quite helpful:
The Day Before:
1) Drink about half to 1 litre more water than my usual daily intake.
2) Rest my legs. If I really feel like running before Race Day, then I keep it to a maximum of 15 minutes at low intensity.
3) Eat high-carbo meals the day before the race in order to load up on stored energy.
4) Check out the race route so that I can plan my run and set the pace for different sections of the route.
5) Lay out race-day clothing and pin the race bib on. Avoid last-minute rush on race-day to conserve energy for psyching up for the race.
6) Since I run with music, I will make sure that batteries are charged.
7) Sleep reasonably early so that I can get up early or on time.
On Race Day:
1) Eat a light breakfast with easily digestable carbohydrates. If I’m lazy to prepare something, then I’ll drink a packet of Milo drink.
2) Hydrate one hour before the run. If I drink just before the race, I find that I often feel a need for the toilet half-way through the race and it’s never a comfortable feeling. Extremely distracting too!
3) Do a bit of warm-up to get the circulation going prior to flag off. Not too much though so that I don’t start the race feeling as if I’ve already run the race!
4) Make a trip to the toilet 5 to 10 minutes before the race starts.
5) Since I don’t run competitively, I do not feel I am slowing down my personal time by enjoying the water stops. It’s unbelievable how the body (and the mind) feels after just a few sips of the water or energy drinks they hand out during the race! I enjoy the race better this way than running dehydrated till the end for just a few seconds faster time.
REMEMBER: Running in a race should leave you with good memories! This will encourage you to be active in races for a long time to come! Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!
