So Many Games to Reschedule, So Little Time

The rainfall that hit the area the past few days forced the postponement of a good portion of yesterday's high school athletic schedule.
Whether the games were in the District, Maryland or Virginia, public or private schools, the postseason was either getting underway or the regular season winding down. The resulting rash of postponements have crunched schedules during a stretch when schools don't have many open dates to spare for makeup games.
In Maryland, the baseball and softball regional tournaments were supposed to be completed this week, with quarterfinal, semifinal and championship games all scheduled for this week. Some teams, though, didn't even play first-round games last Friday, forcing some to play four games in as many days, even if the weather cooperates immediately. All games involving local teams scheduled for yesterday were postponed to today.
The backlog will create problems for some baseball teams, which will not be able to rely on one or two strong pitchers to get them through the tournament. State rules limit a pitcher to 10 innings in three days and 14 innings in seven days.
"Right now, it's going to be the deepest pitching staff and the team that hits the best, that will be the team that comes out of it," Gaithersburg Coach Jason Woodward said.
In Virginia, lacrosse teams are already into their regional tournaments, and soccer teams are scheduled to begin their district playoffs. The regular seasons, though, for baseball and softball have only ended in the Northern Region. Teams elsewhere, like the Northwestern Region, might have to skip a game or two from their schedules.
With private schools, many of whom do not share similar schedules even within the same conference, scheduling is a little trickier.
Consider the Interstate Athletic Conference, which had planned to hold its baseball semifinals last Thursday and championship game on Saturday, only to have both of those rounds washed out. Top-ranked St. Albans is hoping to play its semifinal against Landon today, but it is unclear when the other semifinal between St. Stephen's/St. Agnes and Georgetown Prep will be played, as St. Stephen's/St. Agnes is scheduled to play in the Virginia Independent Schools tournament Tuesday.
St. Albans is trying to get its games in as soon as possible to avoid a conflict with its play-in game for the Congressional Bank D.C. High School Classic, Friday against Georgetown Day.
The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference lacrosse championship games have been moved to today at Ludwig Field on the University of Maryland campus. Good Counsel and Bishop Ireton will play for the girls' title at 5 p.m. and the boys' game between Good Counsel and DeMatha is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Montgomery County boys' tennis championship was pushed back to today at 3 p.m. at Blake.
Perhaps the only benefactors of the rainy weather were those advocating schools to install artificial turf surfaces on their fields, which do not absorb water and can withstand players running on them because there is no mud.
For example, the National District soccer tournaments will go on as scheduled because Arlington County schools installed turf prior to this school year. All boys' and girls' games went on as scheduled at Wakefield, Washington-Lee, and Yorktown.
The Dulles District also seized upon this, moving its lacrosse semifinals for both boys and girls, from the respective field of the top seed, to George Mason High School on Wednesday because Mason has a turf field.
