Gasoline is a great fuel because it is a liquid, that's relatively easy to store and handle, and it contains a lot of energy. On the other hand, the world has a limited and shrinking supply of gas, burning it causes lots of pollution, and at more than $3.00 a gallon, it is getting pretty darn expensive.
If only we could use water in our cars instead of gasoline. Water is cheap and readily available and easy to handle. As an added benefit, we wouldn't have to worry about a tank full of water exploding in a car crash!
While it isn't possible to create a water powered engine in the sense that the only fuel for that engine is water, it IS possible to use water to improve the performance of a standard gasoline engine. Here's how:
If you remember your high school physics classes, you may recall that water molecules consist of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Hydrogen is a powerful source of energy, and if we can get it out of the water molecules in a practical way, we can use it to make a hybrid hydrogen-gasoline engine, in effect a water powered engine.
Today you can buy kits that can extract a small amount of hydrogen from water and let your engine burn a bit of the hydrogen with gasoline to increase fuel efficiency and reduce the amount of pollution created. Thousands of people have purchased these kits and converted their own vehicles.
With gas prices skyrocketing and thousands of people converting their regular car engines into “water powered engines,” this is a technology worth investigating.
